Providing the World's Energy: Problems and Solutions

Graham R. Fleming is a professor of chemistry and Deputy Laboratory Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has been at the forefront of a major revolution in the biophysical sciences, leading investigations into ultrafast chemical and biological processes, in particular, the primary steps of photosynthesis. Fleming earned his Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Bristol and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of London. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Melbourne, Australia, he joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1979. There, he rose through the academic ranks to become the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor. His ultimate goal is to develop artificial photosynthesis that would provide humanity with clean, efficient and sustainable energy. The 2008 Presidential Lecture in Chemistry.
